ENGLISH TEACHER WANTED FOR TIBETAN REFUGEE SETTLEMENT
Would you like to live and work in a south Indian Tibetan refugee
settlement for 6 months or more?
The job is based at Dzogchen Monastery near the town of Kollegal
in Karnataka, between Bangalore and Mysore. (Full contact details
below.)
You will work alongside teachers to support written and conversational
English for Tibetan children in classes 5 (aged10+) and 6 (aged
11+) at the local school. At this point they are making the transition
from Tibetan medium to having all their lessons in English and desperately
need the extra help. Teaching materials are limited, so you would
need to be creative and resourceful. You do not need to be a trained
teacher but a TESL qualification would be useful.
This is a voluntary post and would suit someone who is interested
in making a difference to the future of young Tibetans and would
like to live a simple, spiritual life. There is a minimal charge
of Rs50 (about 60p) per day to cover food and accommodation. As
well as living in the monastery guesthouse with Tibetans and Westerners,
you will have the opportunity, if you wish, to learn Tibetan and
study Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is very poor so the airfare
cannot be paid.
The holder of the Dzogchen lineage, His Eminence Dzogchen Rinpoche,
is the Abbott of the monastery and gives Dharma teachings regularly
when he is in residence. You will also be able to join in the ritual
and practice life of the monastery.
